MOMMY Entry #2: Learning Curves

Happy New Year! I cannot believe it is 2006. We just got back from holiday travels and I’m realizing that this blog idea was a hard one to live up to! My New Year’s resolution - post to the blog! I’ve got to get some “guest” posters in here asap to cover my behind! But, on to more important things…. I had my first “I paid for it so you’re doing it and you’re going to have fun even if I have to force you!” -experience with my 6 yr-old on the slopes last week. I never wanted to be that parent. I always thought it would be my husband saying those words. If they don’t want to do something (mainly a sport) then they don’t have to, right? Wrong. As kids get older and become more jaded (yes, they get mildly jaded even by 6) you realize that it is your job to expose them to things and that parents do in fact know more. And, when you’ve dropped $200 so they can learn how to snowboard, well… let’s just say they are going to learn and have fun. It actually turned out fine. A small pep talk later and all was good. Nobody likes the learning curve, I reasoned. We’re not quitters! Believe it or not, it took me a while to craft my strategy. And, as we watched my adorable little trooper out there in the snow storm falling on his behind Grammy and I recounted the numerous times we cried the entire way down the mountain in the middle of a blizzard, as our husbands yelled “just get up, point down the hill and go… and stop whinning.” I guess its just the sport. Yeah, right. I’m just happy to personally be on the other side of this curve but so scared to think about watching my babies start their march up…. I won’t say it…. ok, I will… the endless learning curves of life. Check box one: first kid snowboarding!
